Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Welcome to Addis Ababa! Visit the National Museum, Haile Selassie Church, and Merkato—one of Africa’s largest outdoor markets. End the day at Mount Entoto (3,200m) to see the palace of Emperor Menelik II and enjoy views of the city. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 2: Flight to Bahir Dar & Lake Tana
Fly to Bahir Dar on the shores of Lake Tana. Take a boat trip to various islands to visit 800-year-old monasteries, offering your first insight into Ethiopia’s Orthodox Christian faith. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 3: Blue Nile Falls & Drive to Gondar
Drive south to see the Blue Nile Falls, then continue north to Gondar. Known as the “Camelot of Africa,” Gondar was the 17th-century capital. Visit the Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure and the stunning murals of Debre Berhan Selassie Church. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 4: Simien Mountains National Park
Drive to the Simien Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Search for endemic wildlife including the Walia Ibex, Gelada baboons, and various vultures among the high peaks. Overnight camping at Sankaber.
Day 5: Drive to Axum via Tekeze Gorge
Travel the scenic byway passing through the Tekeze River gorge and the spectacular cliffs of Tigray on your way to the ancient city of Axum. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 6: Historical Sites of Axum
Explore the ruins of the Axumite Kingdom, including the Queen of Sheba’s Palace, King Ezana’s inscriptions, the famous monolithic stelae, and St. Mary of Zion Church, where the Ark of the Covenant is housed. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 7: Yeha Temple & Gherhalta Valley
Drive to the Gherhalta Valley, visiting the 5th-century BC Yeha Temple and the cliff-top monastery of Debre Damo (men only) or other rock-hewn churches of Tigray en route. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 8: Drive to Mekele
Continue through Tigray to Mekele, stopping to visit rock-hewn churches such as Wukro Cherkos along the way. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 9: Drive to Lalibela
Take a long, scenic drive through the town of Sekota to reach Lalibela, the home of Ethiopia’s most famous monolithic churches. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 10: The Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
Spend the day exploring the 12th-century churches carved directly from basalt bedrock. These architectural masterpieces are connected by a series of tunnels and trenches. Watch the sunset from the hotel terrace. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 11: Asheten Mariam Hike
Take a half-day hike or mule ride to Asheten Mariam church, located at the base of dramatic mountain towers overlooking the village. Enjoy the afternoon at leisure in Lalibela. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 12: Flight to Addis Ababa
Fly back to the capital for a rest day to prepare for the southern leg of the journey. Overnight in a hotel.
Day 13: Drive to Arba Minch via Tiya
Drive south toward the Rift Valley, visiting the UNESCO-listed Tiya archaeological site with its prehistoric stelae. Continue to the highlands of Chencha. Overnight in a lodge.
Day 14: Dorze Village & Lake Chamo
Visit the Dorze people in Chencha (3,000m) to see their unique tall huts and learn about “false banana” bread production. In the afternoon, take a boat trip on Lake Chamo to see hippos and giant crocodiles. Overnight in a lodge.
Day 15: Konso Villages & Jinka
Visit the Konso people, famous for their terraced agriculture and wooden grave markers (Waga). Stop to visit the Tsemay tribe before arriving in Jinka. Overnight in a resort.
Day 16: Mago National Park & Mursi Tribe
Drive through Mago National Park to meet the Mursi people, known for the lip plates worn by the women. Spend time in their village and the local market before returning to Jinka. Overnight in a resort.
Day 17: Turmi & Hamer Tribe
Drive to Turmi, visiting the Hamer village of Demeka on market day. In the evening, you may witness a traditional “Evangadi” dance or a marriage ceremony. Overnight in a lodge.
Day 18: Omorate & Dassenech Tribe
Excursion to Omorate on the banks of the Omo River. Cross the river by boat to visit the Dassenech people in their traditional huts. Return to Turmi for the night.
Day 19: Yabelo & Singing Wells
Drive east into Borena territory. Visit the Elsod salt flats and experience the “singing wells” where the Borena people chant while drawing water for their cattle. Overnight in a motel.
Day 20: Coffee Forests of Yirgalem
Head north into the lush highlands of Yirga Cheffe, world-renowned for its coffee. Relax at Aregash Lodge, situated in a forest filled with primates and birds. Overnight in a lodge.
Day 21: Rift Valley Lakes & Departure
Return to Addis Ababa via the Rift Valley lakes. Enjoy lunch at Lake Langano and do some last-minute shopping in the capital before a farewell dinner and transfer to the airport.
