Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Addis Ababa
Upon arrival at Bole International Airport, you will be met by your representative and transferred to your hotel for check-in and a briefing on your upcoming journey.
Day 2: Addis Ababa City Tour
Explore the capital starting at the National Museum, home to the 3.2 million-year-old hominid “Lucy.” Visit the Ethnographic Museum to learn about Ethiopia’s 80+ ethnic groups, followed by a drive to Entoto Mountain (3,000m) for views and a visit to St. Raguel’s Church. End the day at Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market, followed by a traditional dinner with folk music and dance.
Day 3: Drive to Bahir Dar via Blue Nile Gorge
Depart for Bahir Dar, stopping at the 13th-century Debre Libanos Monastery. Experience the dramatic descent into the Blue Nile Gorge, one of Africa’s largest canyons, with a drop of over 1,000 meters. Pass through the town of Debre Markos before arriving at the shores of Lake Tana.
Day 4: Lake Tana Monasteries & Blue Nile Falls
Take a morning boat trip on Lake Tana to visit island monasteries including Kibran Gabriel (men only) and the Zege Peninsula churches of Ura Kidan Mehiret and Azuwa Mariam. In the afternoon, drive to the Blue Nile Falls to witness the “Smoke of Fire” and explore the surrounding nature.
Day 5: Drive to Gondar & Royal Castles
Drive to Gondar and explore the Fasil Ghebbi royal enclosure, featuring 17th-century castles and palaces. Visit Fasilides’s Bath, the Kuskwam Complex, and the Debre Birhan Selassie Church with its iconic winged-angel ceiling. In the evening, visit a traditional “Azmari Bet” for local music.
Day 6: Simien Mountains Excursion
Take a day trip to the Simien Mountains National Park (UNESCO). Enjoy a short trek to observe endemic wildlife such as the Gelada baboons and admire the jagged mountain peaks and deep valleys. Return to Debark or Gondar for the night.
Day 7: Drive to Axum via Tekeze Valley
Journey toward Axum through the Limalimo Gorge and the Tekeze River Valley. This route offers some of the most spectacular mountain topography in Ethiopia as you descend and ascend through the rift escarpments.
Day 8: Ancient Axum City Tour
Spend a full day uncovering the history of the Axumite Empire. Visit the monolithic stelae field, the inscriptions of King Ezana, the Queen of Sheba’s Palace and Bath, and the St. Mary of Zion Church. Explore the 6th-century tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel located just outside the city.
Day 9: Yeha Temple & Debre Damo
Drive to Hawizen, stopping at the 2,500-year-old Temple of Yeha, the oldest standing structure in Ethiopia. Optionally visit Debre Damo, a clifftop monastery accessible only by climbing a 15-meter leather rope (men only).
Day 10: Tigray Rock-Hewn Churches
Explore the stunning Gheralta massif, visiting remote rock-hewn churches such as Abuna Yemata Guh or Maryam Korkor. These sites require a steep climb but offer breathtaking views and ancient frescoes. Continue to Mekelle for the evening.
Day 11: Drive to Lalibela
Embark on a scenic full-day drive through the Ambalage mountain chain to reach the holy city of Lalibela, arriving in the late afternoon.
Day 12: Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela
Spend the day exploring the eleven medieval monolithic churches of Lalibela, carved directly out of solid rock. These UNESCO-listed sites are architectural marvels, connected by a network of tunnels and trenches.
Day 13: Asheton Mariam or Yimerhane Kirsotos
Choose an excursion outside of town to visit the high-altitude Asheton Mariam (by mule or on foot) or the built-up cave church of Yimerhane Kirsotos, which predates the Lalibela churches and features exquisite woodwork.
Day 14: Lake Hayk & Kombolcha
Drive toward Kombolcha, stopping at Lake Hayk to visit the island monastery of Hayk Estifanos, known for its birdlife and historic manuscripts.
Day 15: Return to Addis Ababa
Drive back to the capital through the highlands. Enjoy some final souvenir shopping at Merkato before a farewell dinner and transfer to the airport for your departure flight.
