Full Day: The 7 Monasteries Marathon
This early morning departure from Bahir Dar is designed for those who wish to see the full breadth of Lake Tana’s ecclesiastical history. Throughout the day, you will travel by boat to visit seven different monasteries: the famous painted churches of Ura Kidane Mehret and Azwa Maryam on the Zege Peninsula; the peaceful Debre Maryam near the Nile outlet; Kibran Gabriel with its historic treasury; the island of Entos Eyesus; and the lesser-visited but equally historic Abuna Betre Maryam and St. George monasteries. Between island stops, you will visit the outlet of the Blue Nile River to spot hippopotamus and giant white pelicans. This extensive tour provides a complete overview of the lake’s religious and natural importance before returning to Bahir Dar in the late afternoon.
