Travel Itinerary
Day 1: Yohannes Maqudi & Abune Abraham
Drive from Mekelle to the base of the Gheralta Mountains. Begin your trek with an ascent to the ancient church of Yohannes Maqudi, followed by a hike to the beautifully decorated 7th-century church of Abune Abraham before camping under the stars.
Day 2: Trekking to Maryam Papasite
Trek through the dramatic sandstone landscape, passing traditional Tigrayan homesteads and spotting local wildlife. Visit the remote church of Maryam Papasite, nestled in a hidden valley, and camp near the village of Korkor.
Day 3: Summiting the Gheralta & Return
Scale the highest point of the range (2,700m) for 360-degree views of the remarkable mountain spires. Explore the cliffside churches of Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor before descending for your drive back to Mekelle.
